Randy Maggiore
Randy Maggiore is an award winning actor who has been in working in Theatre and Education for the last 30 years both abroad and in the U.S. this is his first year working in China.
Randy Maggiore
Michael James
Michael James - has been teaching English Language in China for the last 12 years and has had a passion for creative writing since his early days in middle school.
He has a major in creative writing which is where his love of theatrical performance became a reality.
Michael James
“Why theatrical arts? Well, of all the clubs that we could have formed, here are answers to question which came to us regarding the needs of our students,” according to Michael James.
Michael James
“First and foremost it should be known that the 6th grade in Qingdao Academy is full of talent which is frequently shown on a regular basis in class, as well as in social environments such as lunch time, self study periods, and small class activities.”
Randy Maggiore noticed that, “there was so much potential talent that we felt could be combined with new creative ideas, concepts, new ways of thinking, as well as new ways of growth and development - all based around the English language.”
Randy Maggiore

Both Michael James and Randy Maggiore met in the Fall of 2023 with a vision of creating a new theatre group comprised of 6th graders. Micahel James and Randy Maggiore:“The program was started to give young students an opportunity to express themselves in a safe and creative environment. Children can be free to be themselves as well as learn skills such as memorization, social and motor skills, and more importantly, life skills. All of this knowledge helps the child to discover the world and be open to new ideas in other subjects such as Math, Science and English. The skills that they learn in theatre can benefit them in other subjects because theatre and performance helps build self confidence and self esteem among their peers.” And so was born, The Qingdao Academy Theatre Company All-Stars.
Over a period of about 10-12 weeks, our group met twice weekly to begin work on Theatre games which led to the creation of our class ensemble, with each student observing and applauding each other and learning performance trust. Students later began working on selected age appropriate monologues which were presented and performed in class. “At first, the memorization and language presented a challenge for them,” James says. “Everyone was at a different level when it came to speaking English, so we had to work with them individually, giving instruction, pronunciation and articulation examples.” Maggiore adds, “that peer learning also played an important role in these sessions and it was the first time that students had begun to notice each other's work and creativity”
Work began on a presentation of scenes, and a showcase with the other theatre groups at QA back in late November. Students were assigned scenes and worked in pairs, or in small groups to block, memorize and present scenes for a scheduled showcase on January 11th. Scenes were selected from a book of short plays about “Middle School Life.” Each week, students overcame language barriers and came to understand the characters and bring them to life.
Amanda: “We have been taught how to remember and just as importantly perform the lines we have been given and we remembered the lines and how to act them out.”
Justin: “For me the monologue is the most difficult thing. I was nervous before we started as I was a little shy. However after practicing and our first performance, I’m confident, and I love performing now.”

Lisa: “We are more familiar now with what a script is and have a deep understanding of character emotion. I have realized that there are discrepancies between these characters we are playing, allowing us to better analyze their personalities.”

David: “Last time we were reading the monologue I thought it was difficult for us to express the feelings of the characters we were playing. We needed to understand the scene and it was challenging But in cooperating with the other guys at the beginning, we spent time to improve our skills and I think that I made great improvements in myself, especially when it came to understanding and becoming the character I was playing.”
“By the time we opened our show, our student actors were ready to perform,” says Maggiore. “Despite a few technical issues with microphones, our actors were amazing!” James adds that, “there were nothing but smiles on the faces of the actors and the parents. Working cohesively as a Theatre Director and an English teacher, we were able to sit back and appreciate the opportunity and accomplishments gained by all involved in the production and education of our students both as performers and as young men and women.”
Arts in Education has been growing and making it's way through all aspects of learning around world. It helps us to be more empathetic as well as creating a well-rounded sense of ourselves and how we reflect on the societal issues in the world around us.
Both Maggiore and James agree that, "The message that we are working hard to convey to everybody involved in the group is that cohesivness, confidence and critical thinking are an artistic essentail for becoming the individual that a person growing up aspires to be. It is a process that allows students to adapt to circumstances both personally and educationally, essentially allowing them to grow into young adults in a responsible manner and guiding them on a pathway that suits their future ambitions."
